How to Budget for a Trip: A Simple, Step-by-Step Guide

Image
Everyone means to travel on a budget. Then the flights cost more than you planned, three “small” dinners quietly blow a day’s spending, the currency changes at the border, and by the middle of the trip you genuinely have no idea whether you’re doing fine or heading for an overdraft. A travel budget isn’t about being tight — it’s about spending freely because you actually know where you stand. Here’s how to build one that survives contact with a real trip. In a hurry? Get a ballpark in ten seconds with our free travel budget calculator — pick a destination and a travel style and it estimates the total, with a full daily breakdown. Then read on for how to turn that number into a plan you’ll actually stick to. Step 1: Price the big rocks first Three or four costs make up the bulk of almost any trip: getting there (flights, trains), a bed each night (hotels, hostels, rentals), getting around (transfers, car hire, int...

Introducing Horizon Software

Horizon Software is a small, independent studio in New Zealand. We make little Android apps — the kind that do one thing, do it well, and then get out of your way. This is the first post on our new home, so it feels right to start with what we’re about. Small on purpose There’s a certain kind of app we love: the one that opens fast, shows you exactly what you came for, and doesn’t try to become your whole day. A picture from space. A moment from history. A quick quiz on the bus. Our apps are deliberately small — each one built around a single, clear idea. We’d rather make a handful of things that are genuinely good at one job than one thing that’s mediocre at everything. Free — and staying that way Every app we publish is free to download and free to use — no paywalls, no subscriptions, no features held hostage behind your credit card. A good little app should just work, for everyone. To keep it free, our apps car...

Street Cricket: A Road Trip Game for the Whole Car

Image
“Are we there yet?” has finally met its match. Street Cricket is a free Android game that turns any car journey into a game of cricket — no pitch, no bat, no gear, just your phone and the open road. Cricket for the car — no pitch required All the fun of a backyard game, none of the setup. Street Cricket takes the spirit of street and beach cricket and packs it into your phone, so a long drive or a boring wait suddenly has a game hiding inside it. Simple rules, genuinely fun The rules are quick to pick up and easy to teach, so nobody’s left reading an instruction manual while the fun happens without them. Within a minute everyone’s playing — and, usually, arguing good-naturedly about the score. Made for road trips and waiting rooms Street Cricket is built for exactly those in-between moments: the motorway stretch, the airport gate, the doctor’s waiting room, the queue that will not move. Whenever you need to turn dead tim...
