10 Easy Cocktails Every Beginner Should Master

The Cocktail Shaker — easy cocktail recipes for beginners, a free Android app

You don’t need a mirrored back-bar or a shelf of obscure liqueurs to make a genuinely good drink. Learn a handful of the classics by heart and you can shake or stir something impressive for almost any occasion. Here are ten easy cocktails worth knowing — each just a few ingredients and a minute or two of effort. (Measures in ml; adjust to taste.)

The ten to master

  • Margarita — 60ml tequila, 30ml lime juice, 30ml triple sec. Shake with ice, strain into a salt-rimmed glass.
  • Daiquiri — 60ml white rum, 30ml lime juice, 15ml sugar syrup. Shake hard, strain.
  • Mojito — 60ml white rum, 30ml lime, 2 tsp sugar, a handful of mint. Muddle, add ice, top with soda.
  • Whiskey Sour — 60ml bourbon, 30ml lemon juice, 20ml sugar syrup. Shake (add egg white for a silky top).
  • Old Fashioned — 60ml bourbon, a sugar cube, 2 dashes Angostura bitters. Stir over ice, orange twist.
  • Negroni — 30ml gin, 30ml Campari, 30ml sweet vermouth. Stir over ice, orange garnish.
  • Gin & Tonic — 50ml gin, 150ml tonic, a wedge of lime. Build over plenty of ice.
  • Cuba Libre — 50ml rum, cola to top, a good squeeze of lime. Build over ice.
  • Espresso Martini — 50ml vodka, 30ml coffee liqueur, 30ml fresh espresso. Shake hard for the foam.
  • Cosmopolitan — 45ml vodka, 15ml triple sec, 15ml lime, 30ml cranberry. Shake, strain.

Master those and you’ll never be stuck for a round. (And whatever you pour, please enjoy responsibly.)
