WanderDollar Privacy Policy

WanderDollar ("the App", formerly called WanderWallet) is provided as a free, ad-supported application. This page is used to inform users regarding our policies with the collection, use, and disclosure of information.

INFORMATION COLLECTION AND USE The App does not collect, store, or transmit any personally identifiable information from its users. We do not require you to create an account, sign in, or provide any personal data to use the App.

All content you create in the App — including your trips, destination legs, budgets, expenses, scanned receipt photos, journal notes, moods and photos, saved locations, countries marked on your map, packing lists, and the display names you enter for people in group mode — is stored only on your device, in a local database and in the App's private storage. We do not have access to this data, and it is not uploaded to us or to any server.

The App does not include analytics or tracking.

CAMERA AND PHOTOS The App requests camera permission and access to images on your device so that you can scan or import receipts. Receipt text is recognised entirely on your device using on-device optical character recognition (OCR); receipt images are never uploaded to us or to any third party. Any receipt photos you add are stored locally on your device alongside your other App data, and are only ever shared if you choose to do so yourself (for example, via the backup feature described below).

The same camera and photo access lets you add photos to a day in a trip's journal. Each journal photo is turned upright and reduced in size on your device, and the information stored inside it (such as where it was taken) is removed. Journal photos are stored locally on your device, are never uploaded to us or to any third party, and are only ever shared if you choose to do so yourself.

LOCATION The App offers an optional "Save location" setting, which is off by default. When switched on, the App asks for location permission and, while the App is open, saves your position with each new expense you add on the day it happens. Your location is used only to place that expense, and is never used in the background. The position is stored only on your device, in the same local database as your expenses. It is never sent to us or to anyone else, and you can remove it from any expense at any time. If you create a backup file, or your phone's own Android backup is on, saved positions are carried with the rest of your data. You can turn the setting off, or withdraw the permission, at any time.

NOTIFICATIONS The App offers an optional weekly reminder (the "weekly nudge"), which is off by default. When switched on, the App shows one notification a week about your next upcoming trip, for example the number of days to go and the weekly amount to save. It is a local notification scheduled on your device from trip data stored on your device. Nothing is sent to us or to anyone else. The App asks for notification permission only when you switch the reminder on in Settings, and you can withdraw that permission at any time in your phone's settings.

The App also offers an optional daily journal reminder, off by default. When switched on, the App shows one notification each evening, at the time you choose, on each day of a trip that has a day still to write. It says only "How was today?" and the day and place, such as "Day 4 in Kyoto". It is a local notification scheduled on your device from trip and journal data stored on your device. Nothing is sent to us or to anyone else. The App asks for notification permission only when you switch it on.

TRIP RECAP AND TRAVEL BOOK The App can make a recap of a trip (a set of pictures) and a travel book (a PDF, or a web page packed in a ZIP file) from the notes, moods, photos and expenses you have saved. They are made on your device, when you ask, from data stored on your device. Each photo in them is re-saved on your device, which removes the information stored inside it, such as where it was taken. They are shared only through your device's standard share sheet, to wherever you choose, and only if you choose. We do not receive them. A travel book can include a list of what you spent, and you choose whether it does.

MAP AND PAST TRIPS The App has a Map tab. It shows a world map drawn from outlines and a list of cities that are stored inside the App, so it needs no internet connection. The countries you mark as been there or on your wish list, the past trips you add, and the figures worked out from your trips (such as continents, days away and cost per day) are stored only on your device. The Share map picture and the optional recap caption are made on your device when you ask. The caption is copied to the clipboard of your device, and the picture is shared only through the standard share sheet on your device, to wherever you choose, and only if you choose. We do not receive them. The Share day card, its photos and its caption are made on your device in the same way, are copied or shared only when you ask, and we do not receive them.

HOME-SCREEN WIDGET The optional Android home-screen widget shows the trip name, the days to go and the percent saved, using data stored on your device. Nothing leaves your device, and tapping the widget opens the App.

BACKUP AND DATA SHARING The App includes an optional backup feature that creates a single file (a ZIP) containing your database, receipt photos and journal photos. This file is created at your request and is shared only through the method you choose (for example, saving to your device, cloud storage, or email) using your device's standard share sheet. We do not receive or store your backups. CSV exports of a trip work the same way — the file is created on your device and shared only by you.

NETWORK USE AND THIRD-PARTY SERVICES The App is designed to work fully offline. It makes only the following network requests:

  • Exchange rates — at most once per day, the App requests the latest currency exchange rates from open.er-api.com. This request contains no personal data; it simply asks for the current rates relative to the US dollar. See: https://www.exchangerate-api.com/terms
  • Wikipedia links — on a city page, tapping a highlight or Wikipedia opens your phone's web browser at a Wikipedia search. That page is Wikipedia's service and is covered by its own privacy policy. Nothing from the App is sent with that request beyond the search words (the place name). See: https://foundation.wikimedia.org/wiki/Policy:Privacy_policy
  • Google AdMob — used to display advertisements. AdMob may collect device identifiers (including the advertising ID), IP address, and usage data to serve personalised or non-personalised ads. See Google's privacy policy: https://policies.google.com/privacy
  • Google Play Services — required for advertising and core functionality on Android devices, and for downloading the on-device OCR model. See: https://policies.google.com/privacy

ADVERTISING AND CONSENT The App displays advertisements provided by Google AdMob (banner, interstitial, and rewarded ads). These ads may use cookies or device identifiers (including the advertising ID) to provide relevant advertising.

Where required (for example, for users in the European Economic Area and the United Kingdom), the App uses Google's User Messaging Platform (UMP) to request consent on first launch before serving personalised ads. You can change your choice at any time, and you can opt out of personalised advertising through your device settings under Google > Ads > Opt out of Ads Personalisation.

PERMISSIONS USED • Internet / Network access — to retrieve the daily exchange rates and to display ads. • Camera — to scan paper receipts and to take journal photos. • Photos / media images — to import an existing receipt or journal photo. • Location (approximate and precise) — to save your position with new expenses, only if you switch on Save location, and only while the App is open. • Notifications — to show the optional weekly nudge and the optional daily journal reminder, only if you switch them on. • Advertising ID — used by Google AdMob for advertising, as described above.

The App does not request contacts, microphone, or account permissions.

LOG DATA In the event of an error, the App may collect diagnostic data ("Log Data") through third-party services. This Log Data may include your device name, operating system version, the configuration of the App, the time and date of use, and other statistics.

LINKS TO OTHER SITES The App may contain links to external websites. These external sites are not operated by us, and we strongly advise you to review their privacy policies. We have no control over the content or practices of any third-party sites or services.

CHILDREN'S PRIVACY The App is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we discover that a child under 13 has provided personal information, we will delete it immediately.

CHANGES TO THIS PRIVACY POLICY We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated revision date. You are advised to review this page periodically.
