How this calculator works

It estimates the on-the-ground cost of a trip — accommodation, food, local transport, activities and everyday incidentals — using typical daily figures for 139 destinations at three travel styles: budget, mid-range and luxury. It multiplies that daily figure by your nights and travellers, adds any return flights you enter, and applies a buffer for the things you can’t predict. Every figure is per person and in US dollars, drawn from the dataset that powers the WanderWallet app. They’re planning estimates, not quotes — real prices move with the season, exchange rates and how you travel — but they’re a realistic place to start.

What goes into a travel budget

A good travel budget starts with the big fixed costs — flights and accommodation — then adds a realistic daily allowance for everything else, and finishes with a buffer. For the full method, see our guide on how to budget for a trip. This calculator does the arithmetic for you; WanderWallet then helps you stick to it while you travel — logging every expense in the local currency, splitting shared costs, and even reading paper receipts on-device.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a trip cost?

It depends enormously on where and how you travel. As a rough guide, budget travel in Southeast Asia can run well under 40 USD a day, while a mid-range trip around Western Europe or Japan is often 180–250 USD a day before flights. Use the calculator above for a figure tailored to your destination and style.

How is the daily budget worked out?

Each destination has typical daily costs for accommodation, food, local transport, activities and incidentals, at three travel styles. The calculator sums those for your chosen style and multiplies by your nights and number of travellers.

Does the estimate include flights?

Not automatically — airfares vary far too much by route and date. There’s an optional field to add your return flight cost per person, and it’s rolled into the total when you do.

What currency are the figures in?

US dollars, as a common yardstick. WanderWallet itself lets you track real spending in any of 155 currencies, with exchange rates cached for offline use.

How accurate is it?

It’s a planning estimate, not a quote. Real costs shift with the season, exchange rates and your own choices. Treat it as a solid starting point, add a buffer, and track the real numbers as you go.

Plan it here, track it anywhere. Take your estimate on the road with WanderWallet — the free, offline travel-budget app.
