Kitchen Commander Privacy Policy

Last updated: 30 October 2026

Kitchen Commander ("the App") is a free, ad-supported Android application for keeping recipes, planning meals and building a shopping list. This page explains how the App handles information when you use it. The App has no account and no server of its own: what you enter stays on your device.

Information Collection And Use

The App does not require an account, a login, or any personal details to use. We do not collect, store, or receive personally identifiable information about you.

Everything you enter or the App records - your recipes, photos, cookbooks, meal plans, shopping lists, pantry, cooked log and settings - is stored only on your device, in a local database (SQLite), local files and the App's settings. It is never uploaded to us, and there is no cloud sync, no account and no server-side copy of any kind. Uninstalling the App permanently removes it.

Recipes From Web Links

If you paste a link, or share one to the App from your browser, the App fetches that page directly from the site that owns it, reads the recipe out of it on your device and, if the page has one, downloads its photo from the site's image host. These requests go from your device to those sites, not through us. They see your device's IP address and the page or image address, like any browser does; the photo request also says which site it came from (the site's address, not the full link). We never see the link or the page. The recipe is kept on your device for your own use with a link back to its source. If you share a recipe taken from another site, the App passes what you choose (text, a picture card or a PDF, with the page's photo) to the share option you pick. The text and the PDF link back to its source.

Looking Up A Word

Tapping an ingredient or a technique word shows a short explanation that is built into the App. If you then tap "Read more", the App asks Wikipedia (run by the Wikimedia Foundation) for that one page's summary and picture. The request carries the page title, your device's IP address, and a User-Agent naming the App, its version and our contact address. Nothing else about you is sent. Nothing is sent until you tap, and the answer is kept on your device for 30 days so the same word is not fetched again. See Wikimedia's privacy policy: https://foundation.wikimedia.org/wiki/Policy:Privacy_policy

Photos And Camera

You can add photos to a recipe, or scan a printed recipe page. Photos are taken with your camera app or chosen from your gallery only when you decide to add one, and they are copied into the App's own storage on your device. Scanned pages are read on your device using Google ML Kit text recognition. Photos and scans are never uploaded to us or to any third party. The camera permission is requested only when you tap to take a photo.

Timers And Notifications

Cooking mode timers ring through a notification. The App asks for permission to show notifications when you start your first timer, not when it opens. Timers are scheduled on your device; nothing is sent anywhere.

Backup, Restore And Sharing

Backup writes one file with your recipes, photos, plans and settings and opens your device's share sheet so you choose where it goes. Restore reads a file you choose. Recipes can also be shared as text, a picture card or a PDF, and a shopping list as text, through the share sheet. We do not receive any of these. Where they go depends on the app you pick.

Sample Recipes And Data Sources

The sample cookbook is built into the App and needs no internet. Its recipes are adapted from the Wikibooks Cookbook (CC BY-SA 4.0) and its photos come from Wikimedia Commons under free licences; each recipe shows its credit. Nutrition estimates use values from USDA FoodData Central (public domain, CC0), also built into the App. The App does not contact Wikibooks, Wikimedia Commons or the USDA to show any of this.

Third-party Services

The App uses the following third-party services that may collect information:

- Google AdMob - used to display advertisements. AdMob may collect device identifiers (including the advertising ID), IP address, and ad interaction data to serve personalised or non-personalised ads. See Google's privacy policy: https://policies.google.com/privacy - Google Play Services - required for advertising and on-device text recognition on Android devices. See: https://policies.google.com/privacy - Google ML Kit text recognition - reads scanned recipe pages on your device. See: https://developers.google.com/ml-kit/terms - Wikipedia (Wikimedia Foundation) - asked for one page summary and picture only when you tap "Read more", as described above. - The recipe sites you choose to import from, as described above. They have their own privacy policies.

Advertising And Consent

The App displays advertisements provided by Google AdMob: a banner at the bottom of most screens, a full-screen ad after you save a recipe or open the Plan or Shopping tab (at most one every three minutes), and optional rewarded videos that open some features for 12 hours and stop full-screen ads for that time. Ads may use device identifiers (including the advertising ID) to provide relevant advertising. Your recipes, photos, plans and lists are never sent to ad networks. Where required (for example, for users in the European Economic Area and the United Kingdom), the App uses Google's User Messaging Platform (UMP) to request consent before serving personalised ads. You can change your choice at any time, and you can opt out of personalised advertising through your device settings under Google > Ads > Opt out of Ads Personalisation.

Permissions Used

Network access (INTERNET, ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE) - to load ads, read a recipe from a link you give it, and ask Wikipedia about a word when you tap "Read more". Camera (CAMERA) - only when you choose to take a photo. Notifications (POST_NOTIFICATIONS), exact alarms (SCHEDULE_EXACT_ALARM) and start-up (RECEIVE_BOOT_COMPLETED) - so a cooking timer rings on time, even with the screen off, and survives a restart. The App does not request location, microphone, contacts, calendar or storage permissions.

Log Data

In the event of an error, the App may collect diagnostic data ("Log Data") through third-party services. This Log Data may include your device name, operating system version, the configuration of the App, the time and date of use, and other statistics.

Links To Other Sites

This policy and the App link to external websites, including the source page of a recipe. These external sites are not operated by us, and we advise you to review their privacy policies. We have no control over the content or practices of any third-party sites or services.

Children's Privacy

The App is intended for adults and general home cooks and is not directed to children. It does not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we discover that a child under 13 has provided personal information, we will delete it immediately.

Changes To This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated revision date. You are advised to review this page periodically.
