Dear Diary Privacy Policy

Last updated: 15 July 2026

Dear Diary ("the App") is a free, ad-supported journaling application. This page explains how the App handles information when you use it. Dear Diary is designed to be private and offline-first: your journal stays on your device.

Information Collection And Use

The App does not require an account, a login, or any personal details to use. We do not collect, store, or transmit personally identifiable information about you.

Everything you create in the App - your mood check-ins, entry text, tags, and any photos you attach - is stored only on your device, in a local database and local files. This content is never uploaded to us or to any server, and there is no cloud sync or backup of any kind. Because this data never leaves your device, uninstalling the App permanently removes it.

Mood Check-ins

Each entry begins with a general mood word (for example calm, content, tired, low, or stressed), and the App can show a light, descriptive reflection of your recent mood trend. This is calculated entirely on your device from the moods you have logged and is intended for personal reflection only. The App is not a medical device, does not provide medical advice, and does not diagnose, treat, or prevent any condition. If you are struggling, the App includes a Get Support screen with region-appropriate helplines.

Photos

You can attach photos to entries. Photos are captured with your camera or chosen from your gallery only when you decide to add one, and they are copied into the App's private storage on your device. Photos are never uploaded and are only ever shared if you choose to share or export an entry yourself.

Exports

The App can export your entries to plain-text and PDF files. Exports are created only at your request and are saved or shared only through the method you choose, using your device's standard share sheet. We do not receive your exports.

Third-party Services

The App uses the following third-party services that may collect information:

Google AdMob - used to display advertisements. AdMob may collect device identifiers (including the advertising ID), IP address, and usage data to serve personalised or non-personalised ads. See Google's privacy policy: https://policies.google.com/privacy Google Play Services - required for advertising and core functionality on Android devices. See: https://policies.google.com/privacy

Advertising And Consent

The App displays advertisements provided by Google AdMob, including banner ads on most screens, an occasional interstitial, and optional rewarded videos that unlock extra features. The Get Support screen never shows ads. Ads may use device identifiers (including the advertising ID) to provide relevant advertising. Where required (for example, for users in the European Economic Area and the United Kingdom), the App uses Google's User Messaging Platform (UMP) to request consent before serving personalised ads. You can change your choice at any time, and you can opt out of personalised advertising through your device settings under Google > Ads > Opt out of Ads Personalisation.

Permissions Used

Network access - to display ads through Google AdMob; the App has no other online features. Camera and photos - only when you choose to attach a photo to an entry, as described above. The App does not request location, contacts, or microphone permissions.

Log Data

In the event of an error, the App may collect diagnostic data ("Log Data") through third-party services. This Log Data may include your device name, operating system version, the configuration of the App, the time and date of use, and other statistics.

Links To Other Sites

The App may contain links to external websites, including the crisis and support resources shown on the Get Support screen. These external sites are not operated by us, and we advise you to review their privacy policies. We have no control over the content or practices of any third-party sites or services.

Children's Privacy

The App is intended for a general audience and is not directed to children. It does not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we discover that a child under 13 has provided personal information, we will delete it immediately.

Changes To This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated revision date. You are advised to review this page periodically.
